Privacy Policy

BYU RateMyProfessors ("the Extension") is a free Chrome extension that displays professor ratings from RateMyProfessors.com inline on BYU's MyMAP course registration pages. This policy explains what data the Extension accesses, how it is used, and what is stored.

What the Extension Does

When you visit a BYU registration page, the Extension reads professor names visible on the page and queries the RateMyProfessors GraphQL API to retrieve ratings for those professors. Ratings are displayed inline next to each professor's name.

Data We Access

• Professor names — read from the page you are viewing to search RateMyProfessors.
• Page URL/hash — used only to detect which BYU page you are on (e.g., section chooser vs. browse page). Never transmitted anywhere.
• Optimizer preferences — time preferences and captured course sections you enter into the Schedule Optimizer are stored locally in your browser only.

Data We Do NOT Collect

• Your name, email, or any personal identity information
• Your BYU login credentials or student ID
• Which courses or sections you register for
• Your browsing history outside of BYU registration pages
• Any analytics or usage telemetry

Third-Party Services

The Extension sends professor name queries to RateMyProfessors.com via their public GraphQL API. Only the professor's name is sent — no user-identifying information is included in these requests. RateMyProfessors has its own privacy policy.

Local Storage

Rating results are cached in your browser's localStorage for up to 24 hours to reduce repeated API calls. This data never leaves your device. Optimizer settings (enabled/disabled state, captured courses) are stored in chrome.storage.local — also only on your device.

You can clear the rating cache at any time using the "Clear School Cache" button in the extension popup.

Permissions Used

• storage — to save optimizer settings locally.
• tabs — to clear cached data across open BYU tabs when you click "Clear School Cache."
• scripting — to clear localStorage cache on active BYU tabs.
• Host permission (*.byu.edu) — to run the extension on BYU registration pages.
• Host permission (ratemyprofessors.com) — to fetch professor ratings from the background service worker.

Children's Privacy

This Extension is intended for use by BYU students and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any data from children.

Changes to This Policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this URL and the "Last updated" date above will be revised. Continued use of the Extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the new policy.
